About Kathryn Pauli

That’s me, Kathy, in the photo. I am a lawyer-turned-writer here in Shanghai. Several years ago, my husband asked whether I would consider moving with our two teen-aged sons from our home in Washington, D.C., to China for a year or two.  I was having a bad day and flippantly answered “In a skinny second!” Look where that landed me!  More than eight years later, I still find living and traveling in China so amazing that I can’t help but write about it.

One of my Shanghai essays, Drive My Car, was recently published in the journal Still Crazy. You can access it here: http://www.crazylitmag.com/sc_content.php.

  1. Hi, Kathy:

I think we saw each other somewhere in shanghai.

I guess you never lived in tingzijian.

it is a horrible life in tingzijian in shanghai.

Yes, I think we’ve seen each other before, too. A large city, but a small town. And you are right — I am glad to have the house as it was originally designed. My tingzijian would be a small home, but it is a lovely space. Do you have an experience of living in one to tell? Thanks for visiting. Kathy

Just thinking about you and wanted to get in touch. Googling you, I saw that your mom died in November. I am so so sorry. Love and miss you-Judy

Indeed, you look vaguely like the kid I knew in elementary school who was alone in knowing how to spell Czechoslovakia because you’d been there. This woman of whom I speak was a library assistant with me in the fourth grade, and we had a disastrous date at an America/Jackson Browne concert in 1977 or so. If that is you, my deepest apologies and most adamant admiration in retrospect.

    Hi Kathryn,

Really enjoyed reading your blog! I also just moved to China and want to set up a blog for my friends back home to read. Do you have any advice on what host to use? I hear most of them don’t work out here?

    Many Thanks
    Tom

Welcome to Shanghai, Tom! Sorry for being so slow to check back and reply. My blog is set up via wordpress.com. Yes, many seem to be blocked here, but I’m no expert on this. Let me know when you set up your blog — I’d love to see it! Thanks. Kathy
